The Finder uses invisible Desktop Files to manage the other files on your disks.
These keep track of which files and applications belong together.
This ensures that:
• The correct icons are displayed;
• Files are opened by the correct applications.
Normally this works just fine, but sometimes the Desktop
Files get corrupted or don't update properly: they need to be "rebuilt."
Apple's recommended method of rebuilding the desktop is to restart whilst holding down the Command and Option keys.

However, my experience is that restarting isn't always necessary: it's simply the normal way of relaunching the Finder, enabling you to update those invisible files.
Typical symptoms of corrupted Desktop Files include generic icons appearing
and files that won't open because the Finder has lost track of the application they belong to.
It's wise to rebuild your desktop once a month or so to prevent this sort of problem developing.
Save yourself a restart: use QuitFinder.
