An alphabetical listing of some of the best Mac sites with free info and services available. Most of the sites listed, like this one, are unofficial - that is, they're not specifically endorsed by Apple; Apple's own sites are labelled "An official Apple site."

Seek and Find:

A - L

Apple Collection: A collection of everything Apple, hundreds of Desktop Pictures, jokes, news. Enough to keep you occupied for several days, and a shop too for when you get bored with the free stuff...

Apple History: Nostalgia time: where we came from...

AppleOnline: Mac-dedicated ISP, running on Mac servers too. Up to 25MB web space for your own site.

ApplePrograms.com: Info, software downloads and more.

AppleScript: Everything that Apple thinks you need to know about AppleScript. An official Apple site.

Apple Tech Info Library: The name says it all. Good search engine to help you track down the info you need. An official Apple site.

Apple UK: The place to start if you're a UK Mac user. An official Apple site.

Casady & Greene: Lots of useful info from the makers of Conflict Catcher (7 day free trial available) and SoundJam MP Free.

Inside Mac Games: Games, more games and more than you'll ever need to know about pretty well every Mac game out there.

Low End Mac: Like the name suggests, low end Mac support & info.

M - Z

MacAddict: MacAddict mag's homepage.

MacDownload: zdnet's Mac software collection. You'll have to dig for the free stuff, but there's plenty of it there if you've got the time to search. Beware: you won't always find the latest versions: instead of linking to the original sources, MacDownload expects software authors to post updates - and that can get kinda tedious...

MacFixIt: Prevention's better than cure, so go there now. Everything you need to know (and a lot you don't).

MacFonts.com: Fonts - thousands of them. Need I say more?

MacFormat: OK, so it's a fiver a month for the mag - but the website's free with plenty of useful info. If you do part with your money for a subscription, there's often free software on the cover CD. Personally, I prefer Macworld but I guess it's down to a question of taste.

MacScripter: Scripts, more scripts and more info about scripting than you'll ever know what to do with. Dozens of links to other scripting sites too. Ace.

Mac's Diner In their own words, "Your Essential Guide to Macintosh Software" — definitely one to visit.

MacTopia: Microsoft's Mac Zone.

MacUnlimited.com: Online Mac mag - news, reviews and more hosted by Alex Summersby, former editor of MacFormat mag. Excellent.

Macworld Daily News: Latest news from Macworld mag, and more links than you'll be able to explore in a month of Sundays. And the mag's more than worth its subscription fee for the free stuff on the cover CD's. Always carries plenty of updates, almost guaranteed to save you hours of download time.

Macworld Forum: Live debate at Macworld.

1984 Online: Well established online Mac mag.

pluginsite.com for all manner of Photoshop plug-ins and more. Includes payware, but there's plenty of free stuff to pick & choose from.

Show Me The Info: Just about all the info you'll ever need about the latest Mac kit, from Apple or elsewhere. The info's free - the kit isn't. But there is a free custom-built Sherlock plug-in available to help you search the site.

The Mac Junkie: news & views, features & forum.

UK User Groups, as listed by Apple. It's not an exclusive list, but it's a good place to start.

Versiontracker.com: Latest versions of almost every piece of Mac software out there: more than 70 pages of freeware links, as well as all the payware. Comes pretty close to making this site's software list redundant, but I've come too far to give up now...

WebMasterMac: Everything a Mac webmaster needs: files, fonts, scripts, tips, tutorials and more.

Woz.org: Dedicated to "a free exchange of information, the way it always should be," woz.org is run by Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple all those years ago. Although Jobs seems to take the limelight these days, Woz - as this site demonstrates - is alive & well and still has plenty on offer for the Mac community.

Woz's Mac Links Directory: The ultimate list of Mac Links, conveniently categorized: User Groups, Cool Mac Sites, Commercial Sites, Older Macs — don't waste time reading about them: just go there.
