Welcome to Read/Write Interchange

Read/Write Interchange (RWI) is an AppleScript Utility that converts Read-Only text files to Read-Write, and vice-versa: simply drag & drop the files you want to convert onto the Read/Write Interchange icon.
A dialogue box will tell you how many files have been converted, which way they've gone, and how many files couldn't be converted. You'll have to work out for yourself why any particular files couldn't be converted; the most likely reason is that they weren't text files to start with.

Known Problems

  1. Locked Disks: RWI won't always recognise locked disks, and may tell you that it's converted files that it hasn't. Don't be fooled: if a file's on a locked disk, its file type can't be changed; copy it to a non-locked disk and try again.
  2. Locked Files: If you drop a locked file onto RWI, the Finder will intercept it with a message telling you that changes can't be saved. That's the Mac OS for you, I guess: it's a feature, not a bug, but in this case it's wrong — RWI can and does change file types for locked files (unless they're on locked disks, of course...)
Otherwise, it should be more or less foolproof, but since I've got no control over what you do with it, all the usual disclaimers apply:

Disclaimer
No warranty is offered and no liability is accepted. Your life is in your own hands: handle it with care. Play safe: convert copies, not your original files.

System Requirements
System 7.5 to 8.1: Use RWI 1.1 Download Now (8K)
Mac OS 8.5 or higher: Use RWI 2.1 Download Now (8K)
The only differences between the two versions are that RWI 2.1 is PPC native and features self-dismissing dialogues. Most of the info on this page is included with your download in a SimpleText Read-Only file.

Distribution Info
Shareware distributors are welcome to include RWI on Web sites, CD ROMs etc provided that:
(i) it is not modified in any way (suggestions for modifications/improvements are most welcome, however);
(ii) the accompanying file "About Read/Write Interchange" goes with it;
(iii) no charge is made for it.

A copy of any CD ROM that RWI appears on would be appreciated, but is not a prerequisite to its inclusion. Please email me for my snail-mail address.

Enjoy!
