Welcome to Phil's Dialogues!

It's your Mac: shouldn't they be your messages?

Phil's Dialogues creates custom dialogue boxes, mini-apps that display the messages you want, when you want them, without you having to touch a line of AppleScript! Seriously simple for the seriously lazy.

How it Works

  1. Launch Phil's Dialogues.
  2. Type in the message you'd like displayed.
  3. When prompted, choose an icon and set a button to go with your message.
  4. Your message will be displayed, then saved as a file named after the first few words in your message.
  5. Put your new message wherever you want it: on the Desktop, in the Startup Items folder, in the Apple Menu...
  6. Launch it in the normal way (double-click, choose open from the Finder's File menu, select it in the Apple Menu; if you put it in the Startup Items folder, it will launch automatically on startup).
  7. That's it. Seriously Lazy or what?
Your only limit is your imagination... and the maximum permitted length of a dialogue box.

If you're into AppleScript or HTML and want to know more, download Phil's Dialogues (20k) and open it with the Script Editor.

If you get bored with your message, simply rename the file "Phil's Dialogues" - next time you launch it, it will revert to an uninitialised copy of Phil's Dialogues. Your message will be lost, but you can have a great time composing it again...

Simple Problems, Simple Solutions
1) Phil's Dialogues won't work if you lock it or try to run it from a locked volume, such as a CD ROM. It changes its name as it's going along, and the names of locked files can't be changed.
Solution? Copy it to an unlocked disk.
2) Phil's Dialogues uses the first few words of your message to name your message file. But some characters (such as colons) can't be used in file names: they're "bad characters".
Solution? Avoid bad characters!

System Requirements
Any Mac running system 7.5 or higher; AppleScript.
Phil's Dialogues was compiled with AppleScript 1.3.4 under MacOS 8.5.1 - if it won't run on your machine, try this:
1) Open it with the Script Editor (should be in the AppleScript folder, in the Apple Extras folder)
2) Change something (just typing a space will do)...
3) ...then change it back (if you typed a space, delete it)
4) Click the "Check Syntax" button (should be top right on the Script Editor window)
5) Save it.
This should recompile Phil's Dialogues to run on your system.
