Welcome to The Back Door!

The Back Door is an AppleScript utility that opens your Mac's normally invisible Temporary Items folder. Opening the Temporary Items folder shouldn't cause any problems, but interfering with its contents could destabilise your system; on the other hand, a bit a spring cleaning could be the very thing your Mac needs to sort it out - it's your decision and use of The Back Door is entirely at your own risk.

What to Expect
When you open The Back Door it tells you how many files are in your Temporary Items folder then gives you a choice: Open the Folder or Quit.

How it Works
The Back Door works its magic by creating an alias to an item in the Temporary Items folder, then reveals the original to the alias. If the Temporary Items folder is empty and you want to open it anyway, the The Back Door creates a file called "BackDoorKey" and works from that. It tidies up after itself by deleting both the BackDoorKey file and the alias - but it's your job to empty the trash when it's done. If you're into AppleScript and want to know more, open The Back Door with the Script Editor.

System Requirements
Any Mac with AppleScript installed and a Finder version that can handle the "Show Original" command. The Back Door was compiled under Mac OS 8.5.1 running AppleScript version 1.3.4
If it won't run on your Mac:
i) Open it with Script Editor
ii) Change something (typng a space will do)
iii) Change it back (if you typed a space, delete it)
iv) Click "Check Syntax"
v) Save your changes
This should recompile the Back Door to run on your system.
If it doesn't, you probably changed something you shouldn't have. C'est la vie.

Distribution Info
Shareware distributors are welcome to include The Back Door on Web sites, CD ROMs etc provided that:
(i) it is not modified in any way (suggestions for modifications/improvements are most welcome, however);
(ii) the file "About the Back Door" (part of the download) accompanies it;
(iii) no charge is made for it.

A copy of any CD ROM that The Back Door appears on would be appreciated, but is not a prerequisite to its inclusion. Please email me for my snail-mail address.
